About

Greg Montique is the founder of The Cardboard Chronicles. Greg covers the TCG gamut from Magic: The Gathering to the Pokémon TCG and everything in between, with new content publishing weekdays across set previews, finance analysis, precon breakdowns, competitive banlist coverage, and community commentary.

Greg has been playing and collecting trading card games for over 2 decades, with particular depth in Magic: The Gathering (over 55k cards) and the Pokemon TCG. The Cardboard Chronicles launched as a passion project built around the belief that TCG coverage should sound like a real person wrote it: opinionated, specific, and grounded in actual gameplay rather than press release rewrites.

Greg is an official TCGplayer affiliate partner (code: 9LMM7y). Every card linked on The Cardboard Chronicles goes directly to TCGplayer, where you can buy singles, sealed product, and supplies with confidence.

Secret Lair print-to-demand needs to be permanent, not a one-time test
Wizards just brought back Secret Lair print-to-demand for the Hatsune Miku Commander Deck, with a 24-hour ordering window replacing the fixed-quantity model that's caused sellouts and scalping since 2023. It's the right structure. The problem is it's only confirmed for one drop so far. This makes the case for why print-to-demand with a time limit should become Secret Lair's permanent standard, not a one-off test tied to a single high-profile release.

Star Trek Jumped the Line | Does MTG have a spoiler pacing problem?
This week is the clearest example yet of Wizards' MTG spoiler pacing problem. Star Trek Welcome Decks got a full reveal on August 5, three months early, overshadowing The Hobbit's prerelease weekend and Reality Fracture's three-year story finale in October. This breaks down the release calendar, why the early reveal steals attention from sets people can play right now, and why the drift away from in-universe Magic is worth worrying about.

Mystery Booster Commander Legends dig deep into over 30 years of lore.
Mystery Booster Commander Edition characters go deeper into Magic lore than any set in years. Worzel and Thomil come from Roreca's Tale, the very first Magic story ever printed. Feroz waited 31 years for a card after only appearing in flavor text. Nivea and Zagorka finally close out Jeska's entire story arc. This breaks down where each character comes from, what took so long, and why the Vorthos community is losing its mind over this release.
