Mobile Suit Mayhem: The Gundam Card Game Takes Off!

The Gundam Card Game has entered full beta and fans are getting ready to suit up for battle! Bandai’s latest trading card game entry (and there have been A LOT) gives us giant robots, strategic combat, and a lot of nostalgia to the tables at your LGS. But with an already crowded TCG market, will the Gundam Card Game blast off or be left floating in the void of space? Let’s take a look at how players are responding.

A New Challenger Enters the Battlefield

Bandai is no stranger to the TCG world, having introduced several successful (and some not-so-successful) card games over the years. From Digimon to One Piece, their track record shows they know how to make a hit—but that they also have a habit of launching multiple games one after another. Some players worry that Bandai’s growing TCG empire could lead to diluted attention to each IP, while others are just excited to get a Gundam card game that might stick.

However, some veterans of the TCG scene are cautious about Gundam card games in general, pointing out that more recent entries have struggled to gain traction outside of Japan.

Gundam War Nex-A Card Back

The last failed Gundam TCG, Gundam War Nex-A, was launched in 2011 by Bandai as a successor to the original Gundam War card game that had been running since 1999.

Why Did It Fail?

Unlike other Bandai card games that gained global appeal, Gundam War Nex-A was mostly confined to Japan and never received widespread Western distribution. And with a decently steep learning curve that made it harder for casual players to jump in, its appeal was really limited outside of hardcore Gundam fans.

Bandai discontinued Gundam War Nex-A in 2015, just four years after launch, likely due to declining interest and low sales. Since then, Bandai has experimented with digital card games, mobile apps, and crossover collaborations, but the Gundam TCG market has remained relatively dormant—until now.

Beta Test: Engaging Combat Mode

To ensure a smooth launch, Bandai rolled out a beta version of the game to select regions, gathering feedback from eager players. It was opened to a global beta on December 14th, a promising move that helps developers fine-tune mechanics, balance cards, and adjust rules based on real-world gameplay.

Initial impressions have been positive, with players praising the game’s accessibility and thematic mechanics. Unlike some TCGs that rely on complex combos, the Gundam TCG looks to emphasize, at least at first, tactical positioning and direct combat—very fitting for a game about giant mechs duking it out.

Community Chatter: Hype, Skepticism, and a Few Jokes

Naturally, the Gundam Card Game has sparked plenty of discussion in online forums. The community seems split between excitement and cautious optimism. Some players are ready to dive in headfirst, while others are waiting to see if Bandai truly supports the game long-term.

One eager fan on Reddit summed it up best:

“I love Gundam. I love TCGs. This is a no-brainer for me!”

And of course, with a game based in the Gundam universe, you can expect memes galore with one Reddit user sarcastically stating:

“Can’t wait to commit war crimes in a TCG.”

What’s Next for the Gundam Card Game?

As the beta phase progresses, more gameplay details and official release information will emerge. If Bandai provides strong organized play support and fosters a balanced card pool, the Gundam TCG could become a mainstay in the competitive scene.

For now, whether you’re a seasoned TCG veteran or just a Gundam fan looking to command your favorite mobile suits in battle, this game is shaping up to be a must-try.

Will it succeed where past Gundam TCGs have stumbled? Only time will tell. Look for the Gundam TCG from Bandai to hit shelves at your local game store sometime in July 2025.
