Spicy! | Building a Ragost, Deft Gastronaut Commander Deck

Among the standout legends from Edge of Eternities, Ragost, Deft Gastronaut is equal parts flavor and firepower. Combining artifact synergy with life gain and repeatable damage, Ragost cooks up a playstyle that’s explosive, interactive, and surprisingly sustainable for a red-white deck.

In this guide, we’ll break down building a Ragost, Deft Gastronaut Commander deck from the ground up, covering early, mid, and late-game strategies. You’ll also get five cards you absolutely need to include if you want your Food-fueled firepower to dominate the table.

What Makes Ragost So Unique?

Ragost is one of the most unique cards in Edge of Eternities. The Bobby Flay of Space Lobsters turns food tokens into weapons you can use to punish your opponents. What's even better is that all of your artifacts are also foods now and you can use this to activate Ragost several times a turn. His varied abilities make him super dynamic and a threat in just a few turns.

Ragost, Deft Gastronaut

Colors: Red and White

Power/Toughness: 2/2

Abilities:

  • Artifacts you control are Foods in addition to their other types and have “2, Tap, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.”

  • 1, Tap, Sacrifice a Food: Ragost deals 3 damage to each opponent.

  • At the beginning of each end step, if you gained life this turn, untap Ragost.

What makes it fun?:

  • Turns all your artifacts into Foods, making things like Treasures and Clues double as burn outlets.

  • Damage is to all opponents, making it highly efficient in Commander.

  • The untap ability allows for multiple activations per round, especially with instant-speed life gain and creatures with Lifelink.

This is a Commander that loves artifacts, burn, and a bit of kitchen chaos.

Early Game Strategy – Set the Kitchen on Fire

In the early turns, your goal is to establish cheap artifacts and get Ragost online quickly. Your deck will ideally be running a lot of low-cost artifacts and token producers.

Key Priorities:

  • Ramp with mana rocks like Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and Mind Stone.

  • Deploy early artifact generators like Servo Schematic, Ichor Wellspring, or Oni-Cult Anvil.

  • Drop Ragost by turn 3 or 4 and start setting up recurring life gain.

You don’t need to activate him right away. Focus on stocking your pantry of artifacts for explosive turns later.

Mid Game Strategy – Activate, Burn, Repeat

Once Ragost is online and you have a handful of artifacts, you’ll start chaining life gain and burn damage, especially by sacrificing Treasure, Clue, or Food tokens.

What to Focus On:

  • Activate Ragost using spare artifacts each turn to deal 3 to each opponent.

  • Use instant-speed life gain to untap him on multiple turns and keep pressure on everyone.

  • Add cards that produce multiple artifacts per turn, like Mondrak, Glory Dominus, Kuldotha Rebirth, or Reckless Fireweaver for extra value.

By now, Ragost becomes a repeatable group slug engine. He doesn’t need to attack to close out games.

Late Game Strategy – Go Infinite or Go Big

In the late game, you want to either overwhelm the board with artifacts or create loops that let you sacrifice for life and damage endlessly.

Win Conditions:

  • Use Academy Manufactor with any Food/Clue/Treasure generator to explode your board with artifacts.

  • Pair Revel in Riches or Marionette Master with Ragost’s burn for backup finishers.

  • Cards like Thopter Assembly, Dockside Extortionist, or Nadier's Nightblade can create huge swings.

This is where you unleash multiple Ragost activations per turn, finishing off opponents with chip damage and sacrifice loops.

Building a Ragost, Deft Gastronaut Commander Deck

Ragost, Deft Gastronaut is a spicy take on a Boros Commander deck. He rewards players who flood the board with artifacts, manage life gain smartly, and apply pressure over time. Unlike traditional red-white aggro, Ragost offers scalable, repeatable group damage with combo potential and token synergy.

If you love life gain loops, combat-free kills, and out-cooking your table with clever synergies, Ragost belongs in your Command Zone.
