Wizards of the Coast recently held a preview of the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set. With breathtaking art, beloved characters, and memorable moments players around the world were taken aback by how much time and thought has gone into the next MTG crossover.
But while the likes of Cloud, Cecil, Yuffie, and Terra took the crowd by storm there was one stand out that continues to garner a ton of attention and for a good, albeit scary reason. Enter Jumbo Cactuar
MTG's Jumbo Cactuar Launches into Battle
We all know that green creatures can be very large, high-cost, stompy machines. From dinosaurs to hydras, green has always been the source of raw power. But every once in a while, we get a card that goes maybe a bit too far.

10,000. That's the number you see before you are cast into oblivion by a giant house plant. Jumbo Cactuar's ability, 10,000 Needles, is completely ridiculous. When it attacks it becomes a 10,000/7 nightmare, which in its own right is a chunky blocker but at the same time a devastating bomb.
And we know green. Giving the massive cactus trample is extremely easy to do at instant speed. For a single Forest, you can cast Unnatural Predation, turning your opponent into a cloud of pink mist.
A Surge in Simic Play?
So let's say we want to kick it up a notch. For those who want the best chance to do maximum damage with our new pointy friend while putting an end to any removal shenanigans, I think Simic is your best play.
It's a fact that Blue is the best at removal with its endless counters, but there is an interesting combo that has the chance to be devastating.
Do it. Give every creature on your board +10,000/+10,000 and trample. Make a saproling token deck, toss in this combo, and reenact Little Shop of Horrors. Or if you are feeling fancy you can play Berserk before Overwhelming Stampede and instead give every creature +20,000/+20,000. You know, you have options. But given the array of ways this mustached menace has to make players say uncle, not all hope is lost.
Is there a God?
Though a formidable powerhouse, it doesn't signal the end of times. Jumbo Cactuar is not invincible (hello Doom Blade). There is removal in every color and once this card hits the table you become enemy number one.
So unless you are lucky and have your combo set early, chances are your game will be over before you can say Phoenix Down.
