MTG Meets Final Fantasy: Magic the Gathering's Next Big Crossover

Magic: The Gathering is set to expand its universe with the much-anticipated introduction of Final Fantasy-themed Commander decks. This collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix will bring iconic characters, spells, and settings from the Final Fantasy series into the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.

The upcoming release, highlighted on IGN, will feature multiple Commander decks, each representing different eras and settings from the Final Fantasy franchise. Players can look forward to new cards that capture the essence of beloved characters like Cloud, Terra, and Tidus, as well as famous spells and summons from the series.

Magic the Gathering x FInal Fantasy Commanders

Three Commander decks have been revealed for the Final Fantasy set in Bant, Naya, and Mardu color combinations. Let's take a look at the commanders you can control in the upcoming set!

Cloud Strife Magic The Gathering Final Fantasy

Cloud, ex-SOLDIER

  • Mana Cost: 2RGW

  • Key Features:

    • Haste

    • Card Draw

    • Treasure Tokens

You can't have a Final Fantasy set without Cloud. In a Naya color scheme, Cloud makes use of equipment to draw cards. With green play, you can beef Cloud up from his base power of 4 to 7+ to create treasure tokens when he attacks. Create treasure, gain mana, and pay for what we assume to be some big green creatures while creating havoc with the power of 1000 red suns.

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian

Tidus, Yuna's Guardian

  • Mana Cost: GWB

  • Key Features:

    • Counter Move

    • Card Draw

    • Proliferate

Bant players cheer, literally! Tidus is all about moving and creating counters. Proliferate decks can get crazy quickly and Tidus lets creatures that don't normally have counters join the party. With blue's mitigation, I expect Tidus to ramp fast while overtaking the board if left unchecked.

Terra, Herald of hope

Terra, Herald of Hope

  • Mana Cost: RWB

  • Key Features:

    • Graveyard Recursion

With the might of the Mardu, Terra self-mills to bring what we are assuming to be a hefty amount of low-cost creatures back from your graveyard. Throw in maybe some life gain with white and ping damage with red and you have your self a multi-faceted machine that just happens to give herself flying as well. I think Terra is the most intriguing of the 3 commanders and will have plenty of use outside of the precon that she is included in.

But Wait, There's More

In addition to the Commander decks, there will be special booster packs containing exclusive cards and artwork, offering fans a chance to collect and play with their favorite Final Fantasy elements in Magic: The Gathering. The collaboration aims to blend the strategic depth of Magic with the rich storytelling and iconic imagery of Final Fantasy.

Previews of the new cards and decks are expected to be released in the coming months, with the official launch slated in June 2025.
