The much anticipated Pokemon TCG expansion, Destined Rivals, officially releases on May 30, 2025, and collectors are already feeling the heat. With 244 cards, including 62 secret rares, the set features Trainer’s Pokemon from fan favorites like Team Rocket, Misty, and Marnie.
Pokemon Destined Rivals Continues the Trainer Trend
The Destined Rivals expansion brings a huge wave of new cards to the Pokémon TCG, blending content from several popular Japanese sets: Hot Wind Arena, Glory of the Rocket Gang, and the two ex Starter Decks featuring Marnie’s Morpeko & Grimmsnarl ex and Steven’s Beldum & Metagross ex. In total, the expansion contains 182 regular cards, but when you factor in secret rares, the count climbs to over 240.

Collectors and players can get their hands on some of these cards early through the Marnie and Steven Rival Battle Decks. The set is loaded with nostalgic and powerful additions, including 83 cards themed around Team Rocket with over 45 of those being Team Rocket’s Pokemon, and more than 85 Trainer’s Pokemon in total. You’ll also find 17 Pokemon ex, 10 of which are Trainer’s Pokemon ex, over 20 Trainer cards, and a treasure trove of collectible artwork with more than 45 special illustration cards. This includes 23 illustration rares, 11 special illustration rares, and six hyper-rare gold-etched cards for those who love a bit of sparkle in their binder.
Product Availability: Blink and You’ll Miss It
Preorders vanished almost instantly across major retailers. The Pokemon Center’s online stock sold out within minutes, and stores like Target and Best Buy saw their allocations disappear just as quickly. Some retailers, such as GameStop, have implemented purchase limits to curb bulk buying, but demand continues to outpace supply.

For collectors, this means staying vigilant. Monitoring restocks and acting swiftly are essential strategies to secure products at retail prices.
Scalping Strikes Again
As expected, scalpers have swooped in. Booster boxes are already being listed for over $1,500 on secondary markets. Collectors express frustration over the inflated prices and scarcity of products. One Reddit user lamented, “I’m not excited because I know scalpers will ruin it and I’ll have to pay above market price to buy one ETB”.
The Pokemon Company has acknowledged the issue and promises increased production to meet demand. However, the immediate future remains challenging for those seeking Destined Rivals products at retail prices.
What is your Destined Rivals Plan?
Pokemon TCG Destined Rivals offers a nostalgic journey with beloved characters and powerful cards. Yet, the excitement is tempered by product scarcity and scalping. Collectors are advised to remain patient, avoid inflated secondary market prices, and stay alert for official restocks. With time, the market may stabilize, making it easier to complete your collection without breaking the bank.
