Pokemon TCG Pocket is Stalling: Why Players Are Losing Interest

Pokemon TCG Pocket was supposed to be the perfect blend of quick matches, nostalgic card collecting, and mobile convenience. At first, it looked like it was going to be a massive hit. Millions of downloads, a surge in revenue, and a constantly growing player base painted a bright picture.
But lately, the tone in the community has shifted. Players are frustrated, the hype seems to be fading, and the game’s reputation is starting to take a hit. Let’s break down what could be leading to the fall, why people are upset, and what might fix it.
The Trading System That Backfired
For months, fans asked for trading, and the developers finally delivered. The problem? The system was slow, complicated, and relied on two currencies: Trade Stamina and Trade Tokens.
Trade Stamina only came back over time, and Trade Tokens were hard to get without either events or sacrificing cards. Players were quick to point out that this felt less like a trading feature and more like another barrier to enjoying the game.

Some even compared it to a “paywall in disguise” and threatened to cancel their $9.99 subscriptions. Others turned to online marketplaces like eBay to bypass the slow in-game system entirely.
The good news, however, is that the system seems to be fixed, or at least better. Now trading costs Shinedust, a seemingly unlimited resource in the game, and trade stamina. This makes trading far easier than before and more accessible to the wider player base.
Shallow Gameplay is Wearing Thin
When Pokemon TCG Pocket first launched, its simplicity was part of the charm. Battles were fast, energy was easy, and you only needed three KOs to win.
But now, that simplicity is turning into boredom. Players say the battles feel repetitive and lack meaningful strategy. Decks often end up feeling the same because so many card choices overlap, and the auto-battle flow is 100% robotic, removing much of the decision-making that makes trading card games exciting.
One player put it bluntly: “The card game itself has the strategic depth of a baked potato.”
Battles Feel Like a Waste of Time
Winning battles in most card games feels rewarding. You might unlock new cards, cosmetics, or in-game currency. In Pokemon TCG Pocket, the rewards are so minimal that many players question why they should bother battling at all.
Without meaningful progression, battles feel like filler rather than the main attraction.

The introduction of ranked matches lit a spark for a bit, but it quickly faded, with the only awards at the end of a season being an emblem and hourglasses. So why bother battling if the reward system is so weak? More people are starting to ask the same question.
The Community Is Losing Trust
If you browse Reddit, YouTube, or Pokemon fan forums, the frustration is obvious.
One player wrote, “The gameplay is a step down, and waiting is the only thing you can do. The trading system is nonsense. Cancel your sub and buy no more.”
Another complained about the user interface, calling it sterile and soulless. The overall sentiment is clear: the community wants more substance, more respect for their time and money, and more reason to keep coming back.
What Could Fix Pokemon TCG Pocket
The game is not beyond saving. The developers have already made moves to fix the trading problem, but there are other steps they could take to bring players back.
Add a little more strategic depth to battles so they feel rewarding and different each time
Create better incentives for playing competitively, such as exclusive cards or cosmetics
Rework monetization so it feels more robust and special
Keep communicating openly with the community and showing that feedback is being heard
If they can deliver on these changes, Pokemon TCG Pocket might still have a bright future. But for now, the magic is fading like a wet Charmander's tail.
