The MTG Reality Fracture prerelease guide
Mark your calendar: September 25th through October 1st, at your local game store, six days before the set officially hits shelves on October 2nd. If you read our primer on everything coming in Reality Fracture or dug into how Empower Jace actually works, you already know the broad strokes: Jace snapped, built himself a backup Multiverse called the Echoverse, and Hexhaven Academy is standing in for Strixhaven with five allied-color schools instead of enemy-color ones. This guide skips the lore and gets you ready to actually sit down at a table.
Two things changed for this prerelease cycle, and both matter more than any single card you'll open. Wizards retired At-Home Prerelease kits globally, so this is an in-store event only. And Two-Headed Giant teams no longer get two separate Prerelease Packs. They get one Prerelease Pack plus two extra Play Boosters. Keep reading, because that math isn't as simple as it sounds.
What's actually in a Prerelease Pack?
Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack contents are as follows:
6 Reality Fracture Play Boosters
1 traditional foil rare or mythic rare promo card
1 deck box
1 Spindown die

That's your whole kit for a standard individual sealed prerelease. Six boosters, crack them all, build a deck, play a few rounds. Simple on paper. The promo card is a coin flip between hype and shrug depending on what you pull, but it's yours to keep either way, foil, and playable in the deck you build that day.
Sealed, Draft Night, or Two-Headed Giant: pick your format
Most stores run Sealed off the standard prerelease kit above. If your store also offers Draft Night, that's a separate four-player Pick-Two draft kit: 12 Play Boosters, 1 Collector Booster, 90 basic lands, 10 double-sided tokens, and a draft insert, built specifically for the Pick-Two format where each player takes two cards at a time instead of one. It's a different draft experience if your playgroup is bored of single-pick.
Two-Headed Giant is where the math gets interesting. Each team now receives one Prerelease Pack (six boosters) plus two additional Play Boosters, for eight boosters total split between 2 players, each building a 40-card deck. Compare that to a solo Sealed player working with six boosters for their own deck, and you'll notice a two-headed team isn't getting double the cards per player anymore. It's a leaner allocation and a decent challenge if you want to switch it up.
Building your sealed deck
The rules haven't changed, even if the product allocation has.
Open your pool. Six Play Boosters for individual Sealed, plus your promo card. Sort everything by color before you do anything else.
Count your playables. You need a minimum of 40 cards in your deck, and you can add as many basic lands as you want on top of that minimum, provided by the store.
Pick two colors. Reality Fracture rewards a tight color pair more than a greedy three-color pile, especially with echoed pairs pulling you toward specific character-and-color combos.
Prioritize removal and curve-fillers over splashy rares. A prerelease bomb wins games. A deck with nothing to do on turn two loses them before the bomb ever gets cast.
Build exactly 40, not 41 or 45. Every extra card past your minimum dilutes your best draws. This one can trip up new players; balance is key.
The mechanics you'll actually see across the table
You don't need the full mechanical breakdown to survive prerelease weekend, just the shorthand.

Empower Jace shows up at every rarity, including commons, which means you'll see a Jace token in nearly every game you play. Empowering Jace either creates a new token planeswalker with that many loyalty counters or adds counters to one you already control, and those tokens carry two abilities: minus-one to surveil, minus-three to draw a card. Neither ability ticks upward, so the token's lifespan depends entirely on how many more Empower Jace effects you can stack on top of it. We went deeper on this in our Empower Jace breakdown if you want the full rundown before your prerelease.

Prepared returns from Secrets of Strixhaven. If you played that set, the concept is familiar: certain spells reward setup done earlier in the turn or the game, paying off later. If Reality Fracture is your first set back in a while, ask your prerelease judge to walk you through your specific Prepared cards before round one. It saves everybody time.
Echoed pairs aren't a keyword you'll use, but they'll shape what you open. Every Play Booster and Collector Booster contains one, pairing a familiar Multiverse character with their Echoverse mirror: think Karn, Gilded Guardian alongside Karn, Argent Defender, or Chandra, Chill of Compliance across from Chandra, Torch of Defiance. Pulling both halves of a pair doesn't help your deck any more than pulling one, but it's the kind of thing that makes a prerelease pool memorable even when the deck itself goes 1-3.
What should you actually hope to open?
The headline chase is Bloodline Recollector, a double rainbow foil, serialized, full-art throwback illustrated by legendary MTG artist Mark Poole. It's Collector Booster exclusive, so a standard Prerelease Pack won't get you anywhere near it, but it's worth knowing what the internet is going to be losing its mind over this weekend.
More realistically achievable: shattered mirror cards. There are 13 in the set, with a shimmering "facet foil" treatment reserved for Collector Boosters only, while the standard non-foil versions can show up in any Play Booster. If you crack a shattered mirror card at your prerelease table, you got a genuinely good pull without needing Collector Booster odds.
