Star Trek MTG delays: what's late in your region

5 min read

If you preordered the Star Trek Commander decks, call your store this week. Wizards of the Coast posted an update on October 16th saying select Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek products are running late because of production and shipping problems. In North America, the product taking the hit is the one Commander players circled on their calendars first.

The good news comes first, and it's real good news. Play Boosters and Prerelease Packs are on track. Your Prerelease on November 6th happens. The tabletop release on November 13th happens. Some boxes on the shelf might just be missing for a bit.

Wizards also says the Star Trek MTG delays are fluid and vary by region, and that logistics teams are trying to pull dates forward. So treat everything below as the current picture, with your local game store as the final word.

What's delayed in North America?

Only the Star Trek Commander decks, and Wizards says they may arrive after the November 13th tabletop release. That's all four precons:

  • Federation Fleet, the Picard-led starship deck

  • Landing Party, Spock beaming down with a lands-matter plan

  • Klingon Fury, Worf swinging at the entire table at once

  • We Are the Borg, the Borg Queen assimilating your opponents' creatures

Four Star Trek Magic: The Gathering Commander Deck boxes for Borg, Starfleet, landing party, and Klingon Fury against black.

One wrinkle. The European list breaks out the Collector's Edition Commander decks (the full Surge Foil versions) as their own line item, while the North American note just says "Commander decks." If you preordered the Collector's Edition, ask your store directly which shipment your copy is in. Don't assume either way.

As a longtime Commander player, I'm a little salty about this. Of everything in the set, the precons were the thing I wanted on launch weekend. I'll also admit they're the easiest product to wait on. A Commander deck plays exactly the same on December 1st as it does on November 13th, and your Thursday night pod will not revoke your Starfleet commission because your Borg deck showed up late.

You can keep tabs on listings for the Star Trek Commander decks on TCGplayer as they go live.

Europe, the Middle East, and Africa got the longest list

EMEA has the most delayed products of any region, and the timing splits into two waves.

May arrive after Prerelease (November 6th):

  • Commander decks in French and German

  • Collector's Edition Commander decks (with more quantities coming after November 13th)

May arrive after the tabletop release (November 13th):

  • Collector Boosters in English, French, and German

  • Commander decks in English

  • Draft Night

  • Scene Boxes

  • Beam Me Up Bundles

UK players, look closely at the English Commander deck line. The French and German decks are only expected to miss Prerelease, while the English decks may miss the full release date. That's a strange split, and it means a German-speaking player in Berlin could be sleeving up Klingon Fury before a player in Manchester.

Which Star Trek products are late in Asia-Pacific?

Collector Boosters, Omega Collector Boosters, Bundles, Beam Me Up Bundles, and Draft Night may all arrive after the November 13th tabletop release in Asia-Pacific. Omegas are the single Collector Boosters you find in boxes sold at larger retailers, so if you were planning a big-box-store pack crack, plan on waiting.

New Zealand has one extra item: Scene Boxes there may also arrive after release.

Notice what's missing from that list. Commander decks aren't on it for Asia-Pacific, which makes APAC the one region where the precons look safe right now.

What's still on time everywhere?

Play Boosters and Prerelease Packs, in every region. Those are the two products that make Prerelease weekend and release-week drafts work, so your sealed event and your first booster draft are covered no matter where you live.

Draft Night is delayed in EMEA and Asia-Pacific but not in North America, so stateside stores running Draft Night events should be fine.

You can price out Star Trek Play Boosters on TCGplayer if you're filling the gap with packs.

What to do if you preordered

Talk to the store you ordered from before you do anything else. Your local game store knows its own allocation and shipping status better than any announcement page, and Wizards says the same thing in its notice.

A few things I'd do this week:

  • Ask what's confirmed. "Is my Commander deck in your first shipment?" is a fair question. Most stores will tell you straight.

  • Hold your preorder. Canceling to chase a faster seller usually means giving up an allocated copy for a maybe. Patience is the cheaper play here.

  • Skip the scalper markup. If a few early copies show up online at a big premium during release week, let them sit. The supply is late, and it's still coming.

  • Expect split shipments online. If you ordered boosters and Commander decks together from an online retailer, check whether they'll ship the boosters first or hold the whole order.

And please go easy on your store owner. The boat missed them, and they're stuck waiting on the dock with you.

Watch the deck-exclusive singles

Each Star Trek Commander deck carries 33 new-to-Magic cards that only come in that precon. With the decks delayed in North America, those cards won't be split out and listed in any real volume on release weekend, even while the main set floods the market from Play Boosters.

That gap is where early singles prices can run hot. If there's a specific card from the Federation Fleet or We Are the Borg decks you want for an existing Commander list, wait for the decks to actually land and for sellers to start opening them. Paying launch-week prices for a card that's about to get a whole new wave of supply is the most avoidable mistake in this whole situation.
