Wizards just confirmed the three in-universe MTG 2027 sets at the Magicon Amsterdam preview panel: Noctis on February 5, Kamigawa Titanbreach on June 4, and the long-awaited return of Zahlfir on October 1. Three more Universes Beyond releases are coming that year too, but Wizards is holding those reveals back for later. Between an original underwater setting and a plane getting phased back into the multiverse on top of Mirrodin's old coordinates, this might be one of the more ambitious worldbuilding stretches the fine folks at Wizards have ever attempted as they kick off a brand new storyline.
And that's saying something, because 2026 is already loaded and ends the Jace Multiverse saga. The Hobbit, Reality Fracture, and Star Trek still haven't dropped. Wizards planning this far ahead tells you they're serious about 2027 being a reset point for Magic Story, not a continuation.
When does Nauctis: The Sunken Realm release, and what is it about?
The first set of 2027 is Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which releases February 5th, 2027, and it's the opening chapter of the story arc that picks up wherever Reality Fracture leaves things this October. It's a full underwater world, running from sunlit shallows down into an abyss nobody in the multiverse has fully charted.
Here's the design choice worth watching: underwater settings almost always default to blue, since ocean imagery is blue's most obvious lane. Wizards' creative team specifically pushed back on that instinct, building out what each of the five colors looks like underwater instead of leaning entirely on merfolk and calling it done. Expect shark folk, squid folk, and surface dwellers stuck wearing diving suits just to survive down there.
Nauctis also launches with four Commander decks, which Wizards confirmed is now the standard for every Magic Multiverse set going forward. That's a real shift for Commander players used to spotty support on most of the recent releases.
Kamigawa TitanBreach Bring back the Kaiju
Kamigawa Titanbreach drops June 4th, 2027, and the theme is the Ikoria invasion of Kamigawa. Wizards stayed deliberately quiet on the why, which usually means the story team is sitting on something worth the wait.
Mechanically, this is a clash of two very different aesthetics. Ikoria's monsters and their bonders go head to head with Kamigawa's mechs and pilots, all layered on top of a plane already known for its spirit and honor-themed identity. Anyone with nostalgia for Champions of Kamigawa, Neon Dynasty, or are big fans of Pacific Rim should feel right at home, with a new conflict on top of the familiar setting.

When is Zhalfir returning to Magic?
Zhalfir returns to Magic: The Gathering on October 1st, 2027, the planes first standalone set since March of the Machine. Teferi phased Zhalfir out of the multiverse during the first Phyrexian invasion to protect it, and it's been sitting outside the timeline ever since.
But now it's back, but not as the same plane it was. Zhalfir's people and culture kept evolving while it was phased out, and when it returned to the multiverse, it phased back in on the exact spot where Mirrodin used to stand. That's a genuinely strange piece of cosmic real estate, and it opens up a lot of story questions Wizards will have to answer.
Wizards also confirmed they worked with cultural consultants and Afrofantasy creatives to shape Zhalfir's world, aiming to honor the traditions that inspired the setting while keeping it feeling like Magic. Expect a heavy focus on Zhalfir's creatures and wildlife too, something the creative team said hasn't gotten this much attention in years.

These three sets open a new story arc running parallel to whatever Universes Beyond content drops across 2027.
Reality Fracture closes out the current arc this October, and Nauctis picks up just four months later. That turnaround is the clearest signal yet that Wizards wants 2027 to feel like a fresh start, not a slow wind down. The creative team called this potentially the strongest worldbuilding year in Magic's history. Big claim, but an original underwater setting, a full-scale war on a beloved plane, and Zhalfir's mysterious return make a decent case for the promise to live up to the hype.
