MTG Edge of Eternities Previews New Cards & A Commander Rule Change

Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming set, Edge of Eternities, is shaping up to be a pretty innovative and fun-looking release. Set to launch on August 1, 2025, this space-themed expansion introduces not only new cards and mechanics but also a game-changing update to the Commander format.

So let's take a look at some Edge of Eternities previews and break down the commander shake-up.

The Rule Change: Vehicles and Spacecraft as Commanders

Let's get the big news out of the way first. Starting with Edge of Eternities, legendary Vehicles and Spacecraft (A new Vehicle type) with a power/toughness box are now eligible to be your Commander.

This means iconic cards like Parhelion II, Esika’s Chariot, and even new entries like The Seriema can now lead your 100-card deck into battle.

Spaceship with blue energy flies through a cosmic storm. Text reads: "The Seriema, Legendary Artifact — Spacecraft, Flying."

To qualify, the card must:

  • Be legendary

  • Have a power/toughness box (i.e., be capable of becoming a creature)

This opens up 22+ new potential commanders right out of the gate.

How It Works

Even as a Commander, a Vehicle still needs to be crewed to become a creature. In the same vein, Spacecraft must be stationed, a new mechanic introduced in Edge of Eternities, where you tap creatures to add charge counters to your spacecraft. While this adds a layer of complexity, it also introduces fresh strategic depth and deck-building opportunities.

Why This Matters

While not every Vehicle is competitively viable, this change is a flavorful and fun expansion of the format. It allows players to build around previously sidelined cards and explore new synergies. Plus, it’s a nod to the growing popularity of thematic and narrative-driven Commander decks and adds more play, depth, and options to the ever-expanding Universes Beyond collection.

Edge of Eternities Card Previews

We got a look at a few more cards aside from The Seriema mentioned earlier.

Tezzeret, Cruel Captain card features an armored figure with glowing elements, holding a blue orb in a fiery setting. Text details abilities.

Once thought dead, Tezzeret has returned with a vengeance. Tezzeret, Cruel Captain is an instant add to nearly any artifact-centered Commander deck. With several cheap drops, like Myrs, you can buff him up quickly to reach his -7 ability. Then it's all about ramping up your artifacts and dealing crushing damage.

A card titled Sothera, the Supervoid. Cosmic scene with a central sphere and swirling patterns. Text describes its legendary enchantment effects.

Sothera, The Supervoid is a fantastic option for sack decks like zombies or rats. You can clear your board, forcing your opponents to do the same, then bring back an exiled card to the battlefield if an opponent is left defenseless. A possible board wipe that leaves you with an advantage? Yes please.

The 2 new precon commanders, Szarel, Genesis Shepherd, and Kilo, Apogee Mind, have also been revealed, bringing a little flavor along with them.

Szarel lets you play lands from your graveyard, the bug-guy version of Crucible of Worlds. But his second ability, sacking non-token creatures to buff others, is what makes him shine. His color combo gives you access to black for zombies, which can almost always come back, red for ping damage and buffs, and green for mana ramp and big spells, making him a formidable entry into the crowded commander arena.

Kilo to me is ok. He is hasty and taps to proliferate. You can build in unlimited tap, untap combos, but he really doesn't do much for me. Let's wait and see what the whole precon looks like.

To the Edge of the Universe and Beyond?

Edge of Eternities could be more than just a new Magic set; it may be a bold leap into uncharted territory. With its cosmic setting, innovative mechanics, and the rule change shakeup, allowing Vehicles and Spacecraft to serve as commanders, this set invites players to explore the multiverse in thrilling new ways.

Whether you're a seasoned Commander veteran or a casual fan of flavorful decks, Edge of Eternities promises to expand your horizons and redefine what’s possible at the table.
