That's not X-Men: MTG Marvel Darkhold Destiny Launches April 9th, 2027

Magic and Marvel cracked open the Darkhold on Friday night at New York Comic Con, and the Darkhold Destiny Commander decks are the part I can't stop thinking about. Four precons. One cursed book that draws you cards for the low, low price of your own life total. And a release date, April 9th, 2027, far enough out that we get six months of theorycrafting before anyone cracks a box.

Reality Fracture only hit shelves on October 2nd (catch up with our Reality Fracture preview if you missed the setup), and Star Trek is coming in November, so yes, Wizards is already selling us April. I'm a longtime Commander player, so I'm reading every reveal from that seat.

What is Marvel: Darkhold Destiny?

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny is a Universes Beyond set releasing April 9th, 2027, with prerelease events starting April 2nd, 2027 at WPN stores. It's the third Marvel set in three years, after Spider-Man in 2025 and Marvel Super Heroes in 2026, and it goes all in on the spooky side of the Marvel Universe.

The big difference is the story. Wizards wrote an original plot alongside Marvel's team, and it introduces a brand-new character whose origin runs through a new Marvel comic from Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. The comic goes digital in February 2027 and hits print in April 2027.

The cast so far: Doctor Strange and Thor on one side, Dormammu and Hela on the other, with Magik, Illyana Rasputin hopping in through her stepping disks. Werewolves and vampires showed up in the trailer too. If Marvel Super Heroes was a Saturday morning cartoon, this one is the late-night horror block.

The four Darkhold Destiny Commander decks

Wizards is releasing four MTG Marvel Darkhold Destiny Commander decks on April 9th, 2027: Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, Gods of Asgard, and Strange Academy. Each one also gets a Collector's Edition version. Decklists aren't public yet, so the breakdowns below come from the official product descriptions, and I'll update this post when the lists drop.

Magic: The Gathering Marvel Darkhold Destiny Collector’s Edition commander deck box with horned character and 13+ badge

Lords of Hel (black-red). A token sacrifice deck led by a version of Hela. Heads up: it's a different Hela from the mono-black main-set card. Make bodies, then feed them to something hungry. Rakdos aristocrats is the archetype your playgroup already knows by heart, which also means the upgrade path is obvious on day one.

Magic: The Gathering Marvel Darkhold Destiny Collector’s Edition Commander Deck box with vampire character and 13+ label

Midnight Sons (white-black). Blade leads a Vampire typal deck that gains life and then spends it to power effects. A vampire hunter running a vampire army. Blade's therapist has follow-up questions. Life as currency is the best trick Orzhov has ever had, and pairing it with a typal payoff gives this deck a clear plan.

Magic: The Gathering Marvel Darkhold Destiny Collector’s Edition Commander Deck box with Thor artwork, lightning, and red 13+ badge

Gods of Asgard (red-green-white). Thor commands a Naya deck that rewards creatures with 4 or more power, with equipment as the glue. Equipment pumps power, power turns the deck on, and suddenly your 2/2 holding a hammer is a god.

Magic: The Gathering Marvel Darkhold Destiny Collector's Edition Commander Deck box with Doctor Strange artwork and 13+ badge.

Strange Academy (white-blue-black). Doctor Strange leads an Esper blink deck, flickering creatures in and out of play to reuse their enter-the-battlefield effects. The portal flavor is perfect. It's also my pick of the four. Blink decks get better with smart card choices, which keeps upgrades cheap, and Esper has the deepest pool of removal and card draw in the format.

How does The Darkhold work?

The Darkhold is a three-mana black legendary artifact that taps to put a sin counter on itself, draws you a card for each sin counter, and then makes you lose 1 life for each card in your hand. A second ability costs 6BB plus a tap, works only at sorcery speed, and sets each player's life total to the lowest life total among all players.

Magic: The Gathering card The Darkhold, a glowing book writhing with tentacles in a dark purple-pink scene, ominous and eerie.

Let's run the math on that first ability. First activation: one counter, draw one, then pay for every card you're holding. Sitting on six cards? Six life, gone. Third activation: three counters, draw three, and if you never emptied your hand, you're writing double digits on the scorepad.

Everyone is comparing it to The One Ring, and the comparison holds up. Both draw more every turn. The One Ring taxes you at upkeep for every burden counter it has, while The Darkhold taxes you for hoarding. Play your lands, cast your spells, keep your grip small, and the book stays affordable.

Three of the four Darkhold Destiny Commander decks run black, so The Darkhold fits Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, and Strange Academy. Gods of Asgard is the only one locked out.

Is The Darkhold broken in Commander?

The Darkhold is strong in Commander, and the 6BB ability is the reason. Setting everyone to the lowest life total turns all that self-inflicted damage into a weapon.

Say you've drawn yourself down to 9 life. Your opponents are sitting pretty at 30-something. You pay eight, tap the book, and every one of them drops to 9. Under the comprehensive rules (rule 119.5), a player whose life total "becomes" a number gains or loses the difference, so that drop counts as life loss. That's the whole trick.

Put Bloodletter of Aclazotz on the battlefield first. It doubles life lost by opponents during your turn, so the player at 30 who should drop 21 loses 42 instead. Table's over. Main-set Hela, Mistress of Darkness also makes tapped 2/2 Zombie tokens off life loss during your turn, so the same activation fills your board while it empties their life totals.

The catch is the word "lowest." The ability pulls everyone down to whoever is lowest, you included. If you're at 30 and the Lords of Hel player across the table is clinging to 4, congratulations, you're at 4 now too. The Darkhold is a symmetrical effect that you get to time, and timing it wrong is going to produce some legendary salt.

All of this runs on the card text Wizards showed at NYCC. Final Oracle wording can shift before April, so I'll recheck this section when the full card gallery lands.

New mechanics in Darkhold Destiny

Darkhold Destiny brings two mechanics we can explain and one we can't yet: Vengeance, a returning Arcane spell subtype, and something called Dimension.

Magic: The Gathering card Hela, Mistress of Darkness, a glowing green-and-pink sorceress raising undead figures in a dark scene.

Vengeance puts an instant or sorcery half on a creature card, and you can only cast that half from your graveyard. Cast it, then exile it. Hela, Mistress of Darkness has the best example so far: her Vengeance half, Dark Tutor, searches your library for any card, puts it into your hand or graveyard, and costs you 3 life. A tutor that shows up after the creature dies. Commander players are going to discard and mill Hela on purpose.

Magic card Rise from the Nether shows fiery demons over lava; text says create 3/1 black tokens from graveyard.

Arcane is back. Kamigawa veterans remember splice onto Arcane, and Mark Rosewater once put that version at a 9 on his Storm scale. He rated Arcane as a spell subtype that does something new as more likely, and that's what we're getting. Hela's Arcanum and Rise from the Nether are the first two Arcane spells revealed.

Temple of Khonshu land card showing moonlit ruins and a robed statue; text says it enters tapped unless you control a Dimension.

Dimension is the mystery. Temple of Khonshu is a land that enters tapped unless you control a Dimension, and that's all Wizards has shown. My guess is a new permanent subtype tied to the set's dimension-hopping story. Guess, flagged as a guess.

What Darkhold Destiny products can you preorder?

Darkhold Destiny preorders are open now at local game stores, TCGplayer, and Amazon.

The WPN product list includes:

  • Prerelease Pack (six boosters, one traditional foil rare or mythic, and a Spindown life counter)

  • Booster Packs and Booster Displays

  • Collector Boosters and Collector Booster Displays

  • Draft Night

  • Bundle and the Arcanum Bundle

  • Four Commander Decks, plus Collector's Edition versions of each

  • Scene Boxes

Wizards hasn't published decklists or full card galleries for the Commander products, and April is a long way off. I'd lock in a preorder at your LGS for the deck you know you want and hold off on anything priced above MSRP. Sealed product shipping in six months doesn't need a premium in October.

Read the comic first

The story arrives before the cards. The Lanzing and Kelly comic goes digital in February 2027, two months ahead of prerelease, which means anyone who reads it walks into April already knowing which cards matter to the plot and which new character everyone will be chasing. This time, the cards are the sequel to a story you can read first. Read the comic, then crack the packs.

Its second ability costs 6BB and a tap, works at sorcery speed, and sets each player's life total to the lowest life total among all players.

Is The Darkhold better than The One Ring?

The Darkhold is riskier than The One Ring because it costs black mana, offers no protection when it enters, and charges life based on hand size. The Darkhold has a bigger ceiling in Commander because its 6BB ability can drop every opponent to your life total.
