Planeswalker price spike: what Tam, the Possibility did to the Commander market

7 min read

Reality Fracture arrived October 2nd, and two commanders pulled players toward Superfriends: Tam from the main set and Jace, Multiverse Architect, from the precon I covered in my Multiverse Reforged decklist breakdown. MTGGoldfish's weekly finance column calls Tam the most popular new commander in the main set and links her to a long list of price jumps. Card Kingdom is already out of stock on most of those cards.

Tam, the Possibility costs less than a dollar. The cards she makes Commander players clamor for are now upwards of $30. That gap is the planeswalker price spike, and it moves fast enough that I checked every current price below against live pages on October 5th, 2026.

What is causing the planeswalker price spike?

Two commanders are causing the planeswalker price spike: Tam and Jace. Both want planeswalkers in volume, and both want the same short list of support cards.

Tam, the Possibility card art shows a white-haired gorgon wizard casting blue and green spells.

Tam costs 1GU. Planeswalker spells you cast cost 1 less, and for one mana of each color plus a tap, she proliferates X times, where X is the number of planeswalker types among your planeswalkers. That activation makes her a five-color commander and points her straight at Superfriends.

Magic card of Jace, Multiverse Architect: a blue hooded planeswalker with swirling magic, ability text, and lore on the card.

Jace is the other half. His minus three exiles another planeswalker or creature you control and replaces it with a creature or planeswalker from your library, and the Multiverse Reforged precon around him wants anything that squeezes extra activations out of a planeswalker.

The demand figures come with dates. On September 28th, MTG Rocks cited EDHREC for more than 1,100 Tam decks and 422 Jace decks running Onakke Oathkeeper. On September 29th, it counted more than 2,700 new decks running The Chain Veil. Draftsim reported on October 2nd that Oath of Teferi sits in more than 40% of Jace decks.

Supply finished the job. On October 5th, Card Kingdom listed Oath of Teferi, The Chain Veil, Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God, and Azor, the Lawbringer as out of stock in every condition, and Star City Games listed Onakke Oathkeeper as out of stock. Those stores' old prices are stale, which leaves TCGplayer sellers setting the market. Every current price below is TCGplayer's Mid price as shown on MTGGoldfish on October 5th, 2026, unless otherwise stated.

Under $10: Oath of Teferi

Oath of Teferi is the only card on this list still under $10, at $7.99.

  • Starting Value: about $1 (mid-September, per TCGplayer's October 1st column)

  • Current Value: $7.99 (TCGplayer Mid, October 5th)

  • Supply check: Card Kingdom out of stock in every condition, buylist offer $2.25

Magic: Oath of Teferi card with a robed man holding a staff under a cloudy sky; text reads Legendary Enchantment.

Oath of Teferi costs 3WU. When it enters, it exiles another permanent you control and returns it at the next end step, and it lets you activate the loyalty abilities of your planeswalkers twice each turn. TCGplayer's own column had the card at almost $4 on October 1st, so the price roughly doubled again in four days.

This one has the widest demand on the list. Tam decks want it, and more than 40% of Jace decks run it. A card with several reasons to exist has several ways to hold its price.

From $10 to $30: four cards, four different stories

Four cards sit between $10 and $30, and nothing in this wave has crossed $100, so the collector-grade tier is empty. They run from cheapest to most expensive.

Magic: The Gathering card The Chain Veil, showing a purple jeweled mask in an ornate frame, with Legendary Artifact rules text.

  • Starting Value: about $5 (average since the Commander Masters reprint, per MTG Rocks on September 29th)

  • Current Value: $10.87 (TCGplayer Mid, October 5th)

  • Supply check: Card Kingdom out of stock in every condition, buylist offer $6.40

The Chain Veil is a four-mana legendary artifact, first printed in Magic 2015. You lose 2 life at your end step if you did not activate a loyalty ability that turn, and for 4 and a tap each planeswalker you control gets one more loyalty activation. It has sat in Superfriends decks for years, and its price has more than doubled over the past month. This is the spike I believe, for a reason I get to below: Card Kingdom's buylist offer is close to 60% of the price.

Magic: The Gathering card Azor, the Lawbringer, a winged sphinx on a gold-and-teal throne, with rules text and 6/6.

  • Starting Value: roughly $3 (worked backward from MTGGoldfish's October 4th report of a gain of more than 200% to $9)

  • Current Value: $12.67 (TCGplayer Mid, October 5th)

  • Supply check: Card Kingdom out of stock in every condition, buylist offer $2.75

Azor is a 2WWUU Sphinx, a 6/6 flier from Rivals of Ixalan that stops opponents from casting instants and sorceries on their next turn after it enters and turns spare mana into life and cards when it attacks. It has one regular printing, and its popularity traces to a different card: The Ur-Sphinx, the 6WUB legendary Sphinx from the Multiverse Reforged precon. While The Ur-Sphinx sits in the command zone or on the battlefield, your other Sphinx spells cost 1 less. MTGGoldfish says the Sphinx tribe was cheap to build before The Ur-Sphinx was spoiled and that several mythic Sphinxes have never been reprinted. Azor is one of them.

Magic: The Gathering card Onakke Oathkeeper, Ogre Spirit 0/4, showing a hulking ogre spirit in a torchlit hall.

  • Starting Value: $1.17 (Near Mint in July, per MTG Rocks)

  • Current Value: $18.92 (TCGplayer Mid, October 5th)

  • Supply check: Star City Games out of stock, Card Kingdom buylist offer $2.00

Onakke Oathkeeper is a 1W 0/4 Ogre Spirit from Commander Masters. Creatures can't attack your planeswalkers unless their controller pays 1 for each attacker, and for 4WW you can exile it from your graveyard to return a planeswalker card from your graveyard to the battlefield. MTG Rocks traced the first move to September 18th, a few days after Multiverse Reforged was revealed, when 145 Near Mint copies sold in a single day, topping the previous two months combined. The cheapest Near Mint copy cost $5.24 after shipping on September 28th. A week later, the Mid price is $18.92.

Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God Magic card with dark dragon artwork, gold border, and ability text on a planeswalker card.

  • Starting Value: about $5 (MTG Rocks puts the pre-spike price at $4 to $5)

  • Current Value: $30.00 (TCGplayer Mid, October 5th)

  • Supply check: Card Kingdom out of stock in every condition, buylist offer $6.90

Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God is a five-mana planeswalker with loyalty 4 from War of the Spark (UBBBR). He has every loyalty ability of every other planeswalker on the battlefield, draws you a card on the plus one, destroys a creature or planeswalker on the minus three, and ends the game on the minus eight if an opponent controls no legendary creature or planeswalker. MTG Rocks had him near $9 on September 29th, MTGGoldfish's October 4th update put him at $15, and the live Mid price on October 5th is $30.00, a figure Wargamer reported the same day. A Ravnica Remastered copy sits at $35, so picking the other printing dodges nothing.

Tam's discount skips him, since his cost has no generic mana. Jace is the draw: with Jace in play, Bolas borrows Jace's minus three, and you can run that exile-and-replace twice in one turn.

Which planeswalker price spikes will hold?

The Chain Veil looks the most durable and Onakke Oathkeeper looks the least, going by the one signal I could check on every card: what Card Kingdom will pay for a copy.

Buylists trail a fast spike, so those percentages will move. A vendor paying close to 60% on a $10 mythic is betting the price lasts. A vendor offering $2.00 on a card that asks $18.92 is betting against it.

Reasons to exist matter too. The Chain Veil and Oath of Teferi work in any planeswalker deck. Onakke Oathkeeper does two narrow jobs, taxing attackers and later returning one dead planeswalker. Reprints matter most of all, and both The Chain Veil and Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God have been reprinted before, so a new printing is a live risk for either one.

The dates that decide the next move

MTG Rocks' rule of thumb is that Commander spikes cool once new product arrives. The next two arrivals are Star Trek, including its Commander decks, on November 13th, 2026, and Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on February 5th, 2027.

Tam herself still costs under a dollar in her regular printing, so the cheapest test of whether Superfriends sticks is to build her out of cards you already own.

Planeswalker price spike FAQ

What is Tam, the Possibility?

Tam, the Possibility is a 1GU legendary 2/4 Gorgon Wizard from Reality Fracture that makes planeswalker spells cost 1 less and proliferates once for each planeswalker type among your planeswalkers when you pay one mana of each color and tap her. Her regular printing costs under a dollar as of October 5th, 2026.

What is causing the planeswalker price spike?

The planeswalker price spike comes from demand for Tam, the Possibility and Jace, Multiverse Architect decks plus thin supply, since Card Kingdom listed Oath of Teferi, The Chain Veil, Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God and Azor, the Lawbringer as out of stock in every condition on October 5th, 2026.

Who are the commanders behind the planeswalker price spike?

Tam, the Possibility and Jace, Multiverse Architect drive most of the planeswalker price spike, and The Ur-Sphinx drives the Sphinx portion that lifted Azor, the Lawbringer.

What is Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God's price right now?

The War of the Spark printing of Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God shows a TCGplayer Mid price of $30.00 as of October 5th, 2026, up from about $5 before the spike, and a Ravnica Remastered copy shows $35.

What is The Chain Veil's price after the planeswalker price spike?

The Commander Masters printing of The Chain Veil shows a TCGplayer Mid price of $10.87 as of October 5th, 2026, up from about $5, and Card Kingdom lists it as out of stock in every condition.

Is Oath of Teferi sold out?

Card Kingdom lists Oath of Teferi as out of stock in every condition as of October 5th, 2026, and TCGplayer shows a Mid price of $7.99 for the Dominaria printing.

Will planeswalker prices keep rising?

No source can guarantee that planeswalker prices keep rising. MTG Rocks notes that Commander spikes tend to cool once new product arrives, and Star Trek releases November 13th, 2026, followed by Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on February 5th, 2027.
