Multiverse Reforged Commander Deck: what to keep and where to swap
The Multiverse Reforged decklist reads like a Jace fan's dream journal stapled to a Commander bargain bin. I mean that as a compliment to the box and a warning about the deck.
This is the only new Commander precon in Reality Fracture. It lands October 2nd with 18 new-to-Magic cards, four colors, and a plan built on swapping tokens for giant creatures and awesome abilities. Played as printed, I think it's slow and top-heavy. Scrapped for parts, it's a very good spares bin, and the parts are why I'd buy it. What is in the Multiverse Reforged decklist?
The Multiverse Reforged decklist is white, blue, black, and red, led by Jace, Multiverse Architect as the face commander and Nissa, Leyline Tamer as the alternate. Eighteen of those cards are new to Magic, which includes the two foil borderless commanders and 16 other commander-worthy creatures and surprises. The other 82 cards are reprints. The plan is easy to say and iffy to run. You make tokens with cards like Elspeth, Sun's Champion, Martial Coup, Secure the Wastes, and Lingering Souls, then trade them up. Jace's minus three, Mass Polymorph, Synthetic Destiny and Proteus Staff all do the trading. Nissa repeats the trick every time a land enters. The prizes include bombs like Darksteel Angel and Archon of Cruelty.

The top end is heavy and uneven
Multiverse Reforged spends most of its power budget on seven-drops. Ten of its 17 creatures cost seven mana or more, and the polymorph plan exists to skip that bill.
When the flip lands well, it feels like cheating. Hit Archon of Cruelty and a spare Soldier token becomes a flier that makes an opponent sacrifice, discard, and lose life something every time it attacks. Hit Avacyn and your nontoken creatures start coming back from the dead.
Builders are already voting with their sleeves. Playgroup tracked 41 community upgrades of the deck as of September 28th. Players cut The Ur-Sphinx from 71% of them, and Omnath from 61%, and four of the five most-cut cards are new to Magic.
Jace is a fine centerpiece. His plus ability draws two cards and buries one, and his static ability makes each opponent pay 2 at the start of combat or leave your Jaces alone. Stock, the deck sits at Bracket 2 with no game changers in the bunch. That is a comfortable place for a precon to live, but weak compared to recent precons that we saw in Marvel Super Heroes and Secrets of Strixhaven. Great ingredients, loose recipe.
Which cards are worth keeping?
Avacyn, Angel of Horror, Ob Nixilis, the Ascended, Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Counsel and Tamiyo, Upriser Crowned are the new cards worth pulling out, along with four white reprints.
Avacyn is the standout. She costs eight, she's an 8/8 with flying and deathtouch, and whenever she or another nontoken creature you control dies, that card returns at the beginning of the next end step. Any black deck built on sacrificing creatures wants a body like that.
Ob Nixilis costs seven and asks for double white, so mono-white lists can cast him without color trouble. When he enters, he destroys every tapped creature your opponents control, and you gain 1 life for each one. At the beginning of each end step, if you gained life that turn, you get a 4/4 flying Angel. Cast him on your own turn after your opponents have attacked, since their attackers are still tapped.
Tamiyo is the sleeper for red-white decks. She's a six-mana 3/5 with flying, double strike, and haste, and she makes you the monarch when she enters. If creatures deal combat damage to you while you hold the crown, they get tapped and stunned.
The white reprints are the other high point. Elspeth, Sun's Champion makes three Soldiers a turn while wiping out creatures with power four or greater, and Sunfall exiles every creature on the table. Martial Coup gives you a pile of Soldiers and, when X is five or more, the same wipe. Lingering Souls rounds it out for any deck with black.
Eleven commanders in one box
At least eleven cards in this box can lead a deck: Jace plus the ten legendary creatures whose text I checked. That's a buffet.
The color spread is generous. Ob Nixilis and Dack Fayden, Helping Hand are mono-white, Avacyn is mono-black, Niv-Mizzet plays Orzhov, and Tamiyo plays Boros. The Ur-Sphinx covers white, blue, and black. Ginger, Queen of Sweets, Omnath, and Memnarch, the Warden are colorless, so they fit in any deck.
Ginger deserves a second glance. She costs six, makes you the monarch when she enters, and creates a Gingerbrute at each upkeep while you hold the crown. Memnarch is the big swing: ten mana, indestructible, two Myr on entry, and a card for every artifact you control whenever he attacks.
What should you swap first?
Cut Dack Fayden, Helping Hand first. When he enters, he reveals creature cards until he finds one per opponent, puts them onto the battlefield goaded, and hands each one to a different opponent. That is six mana to give your table free creatures, and builders cut him from 83% of those 41 tracked upgrades.
The Ur-Sphinx, Venser, Fervent Forger and Akroma, Angel of Fury round out the usual cuts, along with Niv-Mizzet at 68%. I read the Niv-Mizzet cut as a fit problem. A polymorph deck has little use for a lifegain engine, so slide him into a deck that has plenty.
On the way in, the most common adds are Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God at 46%, Oath of Teferi at 39%, Spark Double at 37%, Aminatou, the Fateshifter at 34%, and Propaganda at 27%. Oath of Teferi is the smartest of them. It lets you activate each planeswalker's loyalty abilities twice a turn, so Jace can go plus one and then minus three in the same turn. Propaganda protects you the way Jace's tax protects your Jaces, and Nicol Bolas needs only the colors the deck already makes.
One thing to check when you open the box
Check the Angel token. The first print run ships with a 3/3 blue Angel token from Reality Fracture Play Boosters. Ob Nixilis creates a 4/4 white Angel. Wizards says later printings will include the 4/4 white version, which also turns up in Collector Boosters. If you plan to run Ob Nixilis in this deck or another one, grab a proper token so your game does not stall over what an Angel is.
