Myrs have made on-again, off-again appearances since the Mirrodin set was released in 2003. They are multi-use artifact creatures that have very strong tribal synergy. Then in 2023 Phyrexia, All Will Be On dropped, and with it our new favorite Myr friend Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch was released. If you’re looking for a commander that exemplifies flexibility and explosive gameplay, Urtet is your guy.

As a colorless commander leading a five-color deck, Urtet demands creative deck-building to take full advantage of its unique abilities while balancing mana generation across all colors. So let’s dive into the strategy behind building an Urtet deck and five essential cards that every Urtet deck needs.
Understanding Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch
Urtet brings a distinctive ability to support one of Magic’s most iconic tribes: Myr.
Its abilities are:
Whenever a Myr enters the battlefield under your control, scry 1. This provides consistent card filtering, helping you draw into useful cards.
At the beginning of combat on your turn, untap each Myr you control. This untap mechanic allows your Myr to serve double duty as attackers, blockers, or mana generators.
For (W)(U)(B)(R)(G), tap: Put three +1/+1 counters on each Myr you control. Activate only during your turn. This ability turns your Myr into formidable threats and encourages a go-wide strategy. Plus, if you have enough mana, you can do it twice per turn with his untap ability.
The deck’s focus is clear: generate a critical mass of Myr, use them for mana or utility, and then leverage Urtet’s untap and counter-placing abilities to overwhelm opponents.
Building the Deck
1. Ramp and Mana Fixing
Since Urtet is a five-color commander, ensuring smooth mana access is crucial. Mana produced by Myrs, such as Copper Myr or Iron Myr, must synergize with mana-fixing tools to cast spells in all five colors. Prioritize artifacts, mana rocks, and lands that enable multicolor functionality. Cards like Chromatic Lantern and The World Tree ensure you can utilize Urtet’s abilities without worrying too much about mana.
2. Myr Synergy
Fill the deck with Myr creatures that have utility effects or generate mana. Cards like Myr Galvanizer enable combos by untapping your Myr, while Myr Battlesphere adds token generation and synergizes with Urtet’s combat abilities.
3. Proliferation
To maximize Urtet’s +1/+1 counter ability, include cards that proliferate. Proliferation enhances your Myr army by adding counters while maintaining pressure on opponents.
4. Interaction and Protection
In any commander deck, having ways to protect your board and interact with opponents is crucial. Since Urtet relies on a Myr swarm, include cards that provide board-wide protection like Heroic Intervention or Patriarch’s Bidding to recover from board wipes. Adding a Darksteel Forge makes your artifacts indestructible and much more annoying to deal with.
5. Winning the Game
Urtet decks can win through combat damage, combos, or value engines. Go-wide strategies using pump effects like Overrun work well, as does creating infinite mana with Myr combos to activate Urtet repeatedly or cast massive spells like Genesis Wave.
Five Essential Cards for an Urtet Commander Deck

Myr Galvanizer: The backbone of infinite mana combos in Myr tribal. With two mana-generating Myr and Myr Galvanizer, you can produce infinite mana, enabling Urtet’s abilities or casting game-ending spells.
Myr Battlesphere: A classic Myr card that synergizes perfectly with Urtet. It creates multiple Myr tokens and can deal direct damage while providing an army to untap with Urtet’s combat trigger.
Leyline of the Guildpact: Leyline of the Guildpact is a free drop if you draw it in your opening hand. If you don't, it is a 4 cost in several combos of colors and makes all of your many tap for whatever color you want. Essential for Urtet's counter producing ability and adds some fun by making all of your nonland permanents every color.
Doubling Season: Doubling Season supercharges Urtet’s ability to place +1/+1 counters. It doubles counters placed on your Myr, quickly turning them into massive threats.
Mendicant Core, Guidelight: A recent addition that became an instant necessity in my Urtet deck, Mendicant Core, Guidelight is a 2-drop that allows you to copy your artifact spells for one when you hit Max Speed (speed increases when an opponent loses life on your turn, and only once per turn). With cards like Mycosynth Lattice, you can make all of your cards artifacts, making Mendicant an explosively powerful card.
Now Shuffle Up!
Building an Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch deck is an exercise in creativity and synergy. The key is balancing your mana base, Myr tribal focus, and ways to capitalize on Urtet’s unique abilities to overwhelm your pod. Whether you’re winning through combat, combos, or value while building a fort for yourself, Urtet offers endless possibilities for a dominating commander experience.
