The 2026 TCG holiday gift guide: Magic, Pokemon, D&D, and the gear they'll actually use
A Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box for Delta Reign retails for $59.99. On October 1st, the day after Pokémon Center preorders sold out, TCGplayer's market price for one was $527.97.
That's the shopping climate this holiday season. Almost everything on a card player's wish list can still be bought at a sane price, though, if you know which boxes to grab and which ones to leave for the resellers. This TCG holiday gift guide covers Magic, Pokemon, Dungeons & Dragons and the accessories that get used every week, with MSRPs and release dates, plus the stuff I'd skip.
TCG holiday gift guide: the quick answer for each kind of player
The right gift depends on the player, so here's one pick for each type:
Commander player: a Star Trek Commander deck ($74.99 MSRP, out November 13th)
Someone who wants to learn Magic: a Foundations Commander deck ($29.99 MSRP)
Pokemon kid who actually plays: the Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck ($29.99, out November 13th)
Pokemon collector: a Delta Reign Elite Trainer Box, but only at or near its $49.99 MSRP
D&D newcomer: the Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set ($49.99)
World of Warcraft player: D&D: World of Warcraft ($59.99, November 17th)
Anyone who plays anything: sleeves, a deck box or a zip binder
Prices in this TCG holiday gift guide move daily in December, so check the live listing before you buy. The details, and the traps, are below.
What should you buy a Magic player this year?
Buy a Star Trek Commander deck for anyone who already plays Commander, and a Foundations Commander deck for anyone who doesn't.

Star Trek hits shelves November 13th, or maybe later due to shipping delays, with four precons, each a 100-card deck with 32 new-to-Magic cards, a traditional foil borderless commander, 10 tokens, and a deck box:
Federation Fleet (blue-red-white), led by Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary
Landing Party (green-white-blue), led by Commander Spock
Klingon Fury (red-white-black), led by Worf, Defiant Commander
We Are the Borg (white-blue-black), led by The Borg Queen
Here's the rare holiday miracle: these are preordering under sticker price. ComicBook's buying guide tracked three of the four between $68.29 and $71.74 against the $74.99 MSRP, and GameNerdz has the full set of four listed at $229.97. That's about $57.50 a deck. Wizards' own Star Trek buyer's guide breaks down what each deck does if you want to match a deck to a person.
Can't pick? Ask which Star Trek they grew up on. Next Generation fans get Federation Fleet. Original Series fans get Landing Party. If they light up talking about assimilation, you already know.
For the person who has everything, each deck also comes as a $159.99 Collector's Edition with all 100 cards in surge foil, basic lands included. Somewhere in that print run is a surge foil Spot, Felis catus. Data's cat deserves the shine.
For a brand-new player, the five mono-color Foundations Commander decks that launched with Reality Fracture on October 2nd carry a $29.99 MSRP and are built as on-ramps to the format. (If you missed it, our Reality Fracture MTG preview covers the set they shipped beside.) Prices have drifted since launch: Miniature Market had Keen Engineering at $29.99 while Tramplesaurus Rex sat at $54.99. Check two stores before you pay a dinosaur surcharge.
Can a Secret Lair drop arrive by Christmas?
Plan on no. Secret Lair ships over a window of weeks to months, so treat it as a gift you announce and deliver later.
The receipts back that up. The Hobbit: Desolation drop went on sale August 17th, and its US shipping window ran from August 19th to November 19th. I've sat in enough Secret Lair queues to know that "on sale" and "on your doorstep" live in different time zones.
Two drops are still worth buying this month. Set Phasers to Superdrop goes live November 9th at 9 a.m. PT (pre-queue opens at 8), with Star Trek drops at $29.99 non-foil and $39.99 foil. The Lower Decks drop turns Thrasios, Triton Hero into Tendi, which is the most Commander-player gift imaginable.
The Extra Life drop runs November 16th through November 30th at $39.99 non-foil and $49.99 foil. Wizards says 50% of the sale price, less third-party transaction fees, is donated to Children's Miracle Network in support of Extra Life and the kids and families at Seattle Children's Hospital. Buy it, print the order confirmation, tuck it in a card. Best IOU in the hobby.
Pokemon: how to dodge the scalper tax
Pay MSRP or wait. Pokemon sealed product trades far above retail at launch, then cools off once the release-week panic burns out.
The supply problem is real. The Pokemon Company printed roughly 10 billion cards between March 2025 and March 2026, a record, and shelves still emptied. New printing capacity isn't expected at full scale until late 2028, so this is the weather for a while.

Delta Reign hit shelves November 6th, headlined by Mega Rayquaza ex. Here's where preorder prices sat at the start of October against MSRP:
Elite Trainer Box: $49.99 MSRP, about $133 on TCGplayer
Booster Bundle: $26.94 MSRP, about $79
Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box: $59.99 MSRP, about $528
That's the scalper tax, and you don't have to pay it. Look at Pitch Black. Its Elite Trainer Box sat around $123 six weeks before release. Two months after release, it had settled in the $72 to $80 range. The panic premium got cut almost in half. Best Buy lists the Delta Reign ETB at $49.99, and big-box restocks are where you land MSRP if you set a stock alert and move fast.
The 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box tells the same story with a slower fuse. It launched September 16th at $49.99 and was still trading at more than double that a month later. Anniversary product holds its premium longer, so I'd only buy it for the person who will keep it sealed on a shelf.
For a kid who actually plays, skip the chase entirely. The Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck lands November 13th at $29.99 with a ready-to-play 60-card deck, damage-counter dice, and a deck box. It's a complete game in one box, built to be shuffled at a kitchen table.
What's the best D&D gift for 2026?
The Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set is the best gift for someone new, and D&D: World of Warcraft is the best gift for anyone who has ever raided.

Heroes of the Borderlands runs $49.99, more than double older starter sets, and it earns that price at a family table: 3 to 5 players, character boards for Fighter, Cleric, Rogue and Wizard, over 200 cards, poster maps and 11 dice. The first goblin shows up long before anyone has to open a 300-page rulebook.
D&D: World of Warcraft releases November 17th at $59.99. It adds all 13 Warcraft classes, 16 species (11 new to D&D, including Pandaren and Vulpera), 60-plus new spells, and seven dungeons rebuilt for the tabletop. Hobby stores also carry an alternate Murloc cover, which is the version I'd wrap.
One warning. The foil-cover Core Rulebooks Gift Set in the slipcase keeps showing up discounted from its $169.95 list price, and it's the 2014 books (first printed in 2018). If their group plays the 2024 rules, that set is the wrong edition. For the lore nerd, Dungeons & Dragons Fiends & Foes, an art and lore book on villains like Vecna and Strahd, arrives November 24th.
Card accessories that get used every week
Accessories are the safest gift in the hobby because every player burns through them, regardless of what they play.
Sleeves: Dragon Shield Matte runs about $12 to $15 for 100. Magic and Pokemon both use standard size, so one box works for either. (Yu-Gi-Oh players need the smaller Japanese size.) Matte black is the plain white tee of sleeves.
Deck box: the Ultimate Guard Boulder 100+ holds 100 double-sleeved cards, a full Commander deck, for roughly $10 to $15.
Binder: the Vault X 9-Pocket Exo-Tec Zip Binder holds 360 cards in side-loading pockets for about $30 to $35. This is the Pokemon collector gift.
Stocking stuffer: a Star Trek Play Booster at $6.99. One pack, one rare, one tiny gamble.
What to skip this year
A short list of gifts I'd steer you away from:
A random booster box from a set they don't play. Ask first. A $150 box of the wrong game is a $150 doorstop.
Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Boxes at secondary prices. Two extra packs and a stamped promo are worth about $10 at MSRP, and the market is charging roughly $470 more.
Mystery "collection lots" from marketplaces. Bulk sold as a treasure chest is still bulk.
Anything Secret Lair you need under the tree on December 25th. See above.
Gift a seat at the table
The best gift on this list costs the least: a local game store gift card with or without a specific event attached.
Commander Party Round 2 runs December 11th through 17th at participating stores, right after most Star Trek decks will have been opened. Pair a precon with a store credit and a note that says "Round 2, I'm driving," and you've given a deck plus a night to play it.
For the bigger swing, MagicCon: Detroit runs February 26th through 28th, 2027 at Huntington Place, a quick drive down Woodward for me.
