Magic: The Gathering Meets Avatar: The Last Airbender | What We Know So Far

Updated: 54 minutes ago

The worlds of Magic: The Gathering and Avatar: The Last Airbender are colliding in an exciting crossover that blends childhood nostalgia and elemental mastery with one of the world's most popular trading card games. Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that an official Universes Beyond set featuring characters, locations, and themes from Avatar is on the way. While details are still slow to leak out, here’s everything we know so far.

The Magic: The Gathering x Avatar Announcement

We have known for a while now that Avatar: The Last Airbender was coming to the Universes Beyond line, which has previously brought in franchises like Final Fantasy, The Lord of the Rings and Doctor Who. The set will focus heavily on Avatar's elemental themes, capturing the bending arts of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air.

Release Information

The set is officially scheduled for launch on November 21, 2025. You'll see the usual products like Collector Boosters, Play Boosters, and Jumpstart Packs, but we will also get a few scene sets like we saw with Lord of the Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man set.

A notable omission, however, are Commander precon decks. Instead, they are replaced by Commander Bundles, which include play boosters, a collector booster, and 3 "Commander Staple" cards. I'm actually mad about this. There was an opportunity to make some really cool, thematic decks, and the exclusion of precons is a huge letdown.

Following on the heels of the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set, Avatar: The Last Airbender will be standard legal and playable in all formats. Wizards has confirmed that the set will have a full spoiler season starting in early September 2025, giving fans over a couple of weeks preview cards before release.

Revealed Cards

A handful of preview cards have already been shown to build excitement:

Two fantasy cards featuring a character in elemental actions. Left: red and orange, rocks floating; Right: blue cosmic background, glowing figure.

Avatar Aang / Aang, Master of Elements

  • Card Highlight: Revealed at MagicCon Las Vegas—this double-faced Legendary Creature transitions from Avatar Aang to Aang, Master of Elements.

  • Abilities: Flying is a given, being an Airbender and all. He also has firebending 2, which is explained later.

  • Transformation Payoff: Once all four bends occur in a turn, Aang flips. His Master of Elements form makes spells you cast cost one of each color mana less. On each upkeep, you may flip back to Avatar Aang to gain 4 life, draw 4 cards, put 4 +1/+1 counters on him, and deal 4 damage to each opponent. A huge hitter in 5-color decks.

A woman in a red outfit manipulates water with a focused expression. "Katara, the Fearless" title, and game text below. Scenic background.

Katara, the Fearless

  • Card Highlight: Given away at Comic-Con, Katara seems to bring back the beloved Ally subtype.

  • Abilities: Ally support! If an ability of an Ally is triggered, it triggers an additional time. She's basically a Strionic Resonator in Bender form.

A serene figure with flowing robes and celestial background. Text: "Yue, the Moon Spirit," with game stats and abilities below.

Yue, the Moon Spirit

  • Card Highlight: Beautiful showcase art. Yue is a 3/3 Ally with Flying and vigilance.

  • Abilities: Yue's ability costs 5 mana, but it has Waterbending which allows you to lower the cost. Once paid, you can tap Yue to cast a non-creature spell from your hand without paying its mana cost. So cheat out that Omniscience for free!

Three fantasy cards: Aang airbending, Katara waterbending on waves, and a cabbage merchant holding a cabbage. Each card has text detailing abilities.
Four trading cards featuring characters with unique abilities in action. Backgrounds include water, fire, metal, and sky themes.
Trading cards featuring a magical bison, "Appa," in a fiery setting, and a flying creature, "Momo," soaring among birds in a sunny sky.

Beloved Characters Explain Bending

Bending is a core part of the set, just as it is in the ATLA series. And it turns out the bending effects are pretty powerful.

  • Firebending: When a creature with Firebending attacks, you add red mana. So Aang with Firebending 2 would add 2 red mana to your manapool when he attacks, and that mana only lasts until the end of combat.

  • Waterbending: Waterbending allows you to tap non-token artifacts and creatures to help pay the cost of the ability. Each tapped creature or artifact lowers the cost by 1 or adds to a mana value of X

  • Earthbending: This ability turns your lands into creatures and adds +1/+1 counters to them related to the earthbend value. When that land dies or is exiled, it is returned to the battlefield tapped.

  • Airbending: Probably the most intriguing, Airbending allows you to exile creatures and return them to the battlefield by paying 2. Pair this with the Warp ability introduced in Edge of Eternities and you can cheat out creatures for far less than their full mana cost.

Powerful New Spells

A slate of new spells has been unveiled, featuring popular moments from the show as well as a dual-faced card capturing the rise of Fire Lord Sozin.

Cards like Sokkas Haiku will be very popular in blue decks known for their draw abilities. Adding mill and land untap only sweetens the turn.

We also see the return of lesson cards, introduced in the Strixhaven set. Lessons are a special spell subtype designed to work with the Learn mechanic, which lets you either:

  1. Reveal a Lesson card you own from outside the game (usually your sideboard in competitive play) and put it into your hand.

  2. Discard a card and then draw a card (a rummage effect) if you don’t want a Lesson.

How Lessons Work

  • Card Type: Lessons are always sorceries (as of now) with the Lesson subtype.

  • Access: You don’t usually start with them in your main deck—your “Learn” cards fetch them from outside the game.

  • Flexibility: Because you can keep a “toolbox” of Lessons in your sideboard, they give you answers to a wide range of board states without having to put all of them in your main deck.

Release Plan & Format

  • Launch Date: The set debuts globally on November 21, 2025, and will be Standard-legal, meaning these cards will be playable in regular MTG formats.

  • Preview Schedule: A debut stream will be held on October 28th to show off more of the set!

Expect Prices to Soar

Given Avatar’s global fanbase and the massive success of previous Universes Beyond products, sealed product and singles will likely become hot collector’s items. Wizards has hinted at anime-style full-art variants and gilded showcase treatments for key legendary cards.

Prepare to Master the Elements this November!

Magic: The Gathering and Avatar: The Last Airbender joining forces is shaping up to be one of the most flavorful Universes Beyond releases yet. With the first wave of preview cards already sparking deck ideas, November’s release promises to be a must-have for both competitive players and collectors.
