MTG Marvel Super Heroes Prerelease Guide: Everything to Know

Marvel Super Heroes prerelease weekend starts June 19, 2026, the traditional week before the set's official global release on June 26. If you have been following our coverage of the Commander precons or the Killmonger errata story, this is the moment all of that buildup has been pointing toward. Prerelease is your first real chance to crack packs, build a deck, and actually play with the cards before the content creators and anyone else outside of Wizards' own preview events.

Here is everything you need to know heading into the weekend, from what is actually in the box to which mythics are worth building around.

When and Where the Prerelease Happens

Prerelease events run the weekend of June 19 through 21, 2026, with many local game stores extending prerelease-format play through the following week, leading up to the official release on June 26. The set goes live digitally on Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online on June 23, a few days after the in-person paper events begin. To find an event near you, use the Wizards Store and Event Locator and filter for prerelease events in your area. Recent prerelease weekends have been selling out quickly, so register ahead of time with your local game store rather than showing up and hoping for an open seat.

This caps off the lead-in events Wizards has been running all month. Avengers Academy, a teaching-focused event using Welcome Decks built around individual Marvel characters, ran at participating stores from June 12 through June 18, the day before prerelease begins.

What Is Actually in the Prerelease Kit

A standard MTG Marvel Super Heroes Prerelease Pack contains six Play Boosters, one traditional foil promo card, a cardboard deck box, a spindown life counter, and a player rules insert. You will have roughly 30 to 45 minutes to open your packs, sort your cards, and build a 40-card sealed deck using any number of basic lands plus whatever you opened. No trading with other players before the event, and, more importantly, the 4 copy rule is out the window. There is no cap on how many copies of the same card you can run if you happen to open multiples.

The promo card is the one piece of the kit you hold on to no matter how the day goes. Most prerelease events are offering a choice between two promo options: Echo, Perceptive Prodigy with art by Alessandra Pisano, or Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards with art by Tyler Walpole. Non-foil copies are available at most Wizards Play Network retailers, while traditional foil versions are reserved for WPN Premium locations, so check with your specific store on which version they are giving away. Expect to pay somewhere between $40 and $50 for the kit itself, a bit higher than a typical $35 prerelease since this is a premium Universes Beyond crossover product.

The Mechanics You Need to Know

MTG Marvel Super Heroes introduces three new mechanics that will define how your sealed pool plays. Power-up is an activated ability that lets a permanent unleash its full potential, usually by adding counters or unlocking a bonus effect, and it can only be activated once per permanent.

The cost is discounted if you use it on the same turn the permanent enters the battlefield, which rewards aggressive, tempo-focused play. Plan is a new enchantment subtype that accumulates counters as you take specific in-game actions, then delivers a powerful payoff once it crosses the threshold, giving the set a long-game build-around angle alongside its more aggressive options. Teamwork is an optional additional cost on certain instants and sorceries that taps creatures with enough combined power to unlock a bigger version of the spell's effect, which rewards decks that go wide with smaller creatures.

On top of those three new mechanics, Hero and Villain are mechanically relevant creature subtypes throughout the set, meaning typal payoffs matter more this time. There is also a notable cycle of modal double-faced mythic rares, including cards like Bruce Banner and Tony Stark, that let you cast either the front or back face directly, or cast the front and transform it into the back face later for an additional cost. That flexibility makes those cards strong inclusions in almost any sealed pool that opens them.

The Mythics Worth Building Around

There are 25 mythic rares in the main set, and a handful of them are strong enough to single-handedly carry a sealed deck if you crack one. Thor, God of Thunder is a five-mana flyer and has, "When Thor enters, exile target Equipment, instant, or sorcery card from your graveyard. Until the end of your next turn, you may play that card." and "Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Thor deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to any target.", which turns even a modest removal suite into a repeatable damage engine. Doctor Doom is a six-mana value engine that creates Doombot tokens, draws you a card each turn at the cost of 1 life, and can become indestructible under the right board conditions, making him both a defensive wall and a long-game card advantage machine. Thanos, the Mad Titan is a three-mana deathtouch and lifelink threat with a later activated ability that wipes either all odd or all even mana value permanents, which can be devastating in the uneven curves typical of sealed play.

Captain Marvel punches a cloaked villain on a Magic card, with text reading Captain Marvel, Earth’s Protector and Flash.

Captain Marvel, Earth's Protector is a five-mana flash flyer with lifelink that can become indestructible later in the game, giving white decks a strong defensive anchor. The Mind Stone is the headline chase card of the entire set, appearing in a standard version as well as a pseudo-serialized ultra-rare printing limited to only 150 copies, available exclusively in Collector Boosters. If you are opening Play Boosters for your prerelease kit specifically, you will not see that ultra-rare version, but the standard printing is still a strong pull.

When you open your packs, sort everything into bombs, removal, evasive threats, and filler. Bombs and efficient removal should anchor your deck first. From there, pick your two deepest colors and build around them rather than trying to force a third color without real fixing to support it.

Practical Deckbuilding Tips for Prerelease

Stick to two colors. Sealed pools rarely have enough depth to support a smooth three-color manabase, and a focused two-color deck with a clean curve will usually beat a clever three-color pile that stumbles on mana. Aim for around 17 lands and 23 nonland cards as your starting point, then adjust based on your specific curve. Prioritize removal heavily. With 25 mythics and a deep rare slot spread across the format, you are very likely to run into a bomb at your table, and having an answer ready matters more than having one of your own.

Equipment fits the Marvel theme well throughout the set, but it needs creatures to be useful, so do not overload your deck with gear if your creature count is thin. A good splash is fine if you have the fixing to support it and the card is powerful enough to be worth the risk, but splashing four cards because you opened four cards you like is a common way to lose early. Lean into Hero or Villain synergies only if the individual cards backing them up are actually good on their own, not just because the flavor is there.

What Comes After Prerelease Weekend

Once prerelease weekend wraps, the set goes live everywhere on June 26, including the four Commander precons. If a Killmonger or a Doctor Doom from your sealed pool makes you want to dive deeper into the Commander side of the set, our Doom Prevails decklist breakdown and Wakanda Forever decklist breakdown cover the full decklists and the easiest upgrade paths for each.
