MTG The Hobbit: Revealing Fresh Art, new mechanics, & Scene Boxes

We covered MTG The Hobbit's first look out of MagicCon Las Vegas back in May: Smaug the Magnificent, the Dragon Horde frame, Adventure as the set's central mechanic, and confirmation that there are no dedicated Commander decks this time. So make sure you check out all of that info too. This post covers only what MagicCon Amsterdam added, and it's a lot of archetype-defining cards.

I'm more excited for this set than I have been for a Universes Beyond release in a while. Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth set an absurdly high bar for flavor and art, the kind of set where you could open a bulk rare and still stop to admire the illustration. Everything shown at MagicCon Amsterdam suggests The Hobbit isn't just meeting that bar, it's finding new corners of the story to make interesting. A Bag End dinner party turned into an entire mechanical archetype. That's the kind of design choice that tells me the team actually loves this book.

Inside the two Scene Boxes

Scene Boxes are new-art moments from the book packaged together, and Amsterdam detailed both. The first is Bag End Banquet, built around the chaotic dinner party where Bilbo unwillingly hosts a company of dwarves and Gandalf.

It includes Fili and Kili Joyus, a dwarf-tribal booster; Ori, Plate Stacker, a value creature that destroys artifacts and enchantments on a stick and counts as a dwarf for tribal synergies; Thorin, King of Durin's Folk, a red build-around that cares about any artifact token rather than one narrow type; a three-color Gandalf who casts spells for free based on how many legendary wizards you control; and Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator, a green take on Bilbo who turns Food creation into Food plus Treasure.

The second Scene Box, Treasures of Smaug, centers on Bilbo getting spotted in the dragon's hoard. It includes the Lonely Mountain, a land that gets stronger the more equipment you have out and helps assemble dwarf creature tokens, shown in both a book cover treatment and a surge foil collector booster version.

Scene Boxes were a nice idea in theory when Wizards first tried them, but this is the pairing that sells me on the product line. Bag End Banquet and Treasures of Smaug are the two biggest emotional beats in the book, the cozy chaos of the dinner party and the gut-drop terror of getting caught by a dragon, and putting them at opposite ends of the same product line is smart storytelling on top of smart card design.

Thranduil, Elves, and the Recruit mechanic

Fantasy card of Thranduil, the Elvenking, a white-haired elf noble in green robes on a throne in a blue-lit forest hall.

Thranduil, the Elvenking leads Mirkwood's elves and is one of the very few three-color cards in the set, a deliberate choice from the design team to link back to Lorwyn Eclipsed's black-green elves and give players a way to play elves across all three colors together.

Recruit is the new mechanic tied to Lake Town's humans: draw a card, discard a card, and if the discarded card is a nonland, make a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. It's mechanically similar to Connive from Streets of New Capenna, reframed as Lake Town's scrappy citizens forming a militia against the dragon. The Queen of Dale and Bard, King of Dale both key off Recruit, with Bard doubling up on the value: draw a card, get another; make a token, get another.

Bard has always gotten the short end of the adaptation stick, the guy who shoots the dragon (spoilers) and then mostly disappears from the cultural conversation. Giving him and the Queen of Dale a whole mechanic built around Lake Town scraping together a defense out of nothing feels overdue in the best way.

The Storied mechanic powers red-white dwarves

Storied asks you to collect three historic permanents, artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas, and then turns on a permanent enduring bonus for the rest of the game, functioning like City's Blessing once it triggers.

Thorin Oakenshield card art shows a bearded dwarf noble reading a map in a sunny green valley, with dwarves and a hobbit hole behind.

Thorin Oakenshield's uncommon card points red-white dwarves toward this mechanic, and Biffer, a dwarf who doubles the triggered abilities of other dwarves you control, is one of the payoffs.

Green-blue elves lean on landfall, and the Eagles get kicker

Green-blue elves like Silvan Reveler lean on landfall as their core mechanic, a deliberate departure from the scry theme Lord of the Rings gave elves, chosen specifically to feel distinct within this set rather than duplicate what elves already do elsewhere in Middle-earth Magic.

Separately, The Eagles Are Coming! uses kicker, a rare inclusion for this set, limited to this single card because it fit the theme so well. Base mode returns one of your creatures to hand and replaces it with a 4/4 white Bird Soldier token with flying; paying the kicker cost lets you do it to as many of your creatures as you want.

What are hone counters, and how does Sting use them?

Sting introduces hone counters, placed on Equipment to grant an additional plus-one, plus-zero to whatever creature is wearing it. It's built to represent Bilbo punching above his weight class in a fight once the sword is in hand. The Mirkwood spiders callback appears here too, a deliberate nod to the Shelob card from the Lord of the Rings set, since the dwarves in this story spend more time almost becoming dinner than eating it.

That's a genuinely funny piece of design self-awareness. The last set gave us food as a mechanical theme because everyone loves a good feast. This one remembers that the dwarves spend half the book as someone else's meal, and leans into the joke instead of pretending it away.

More new mechanics: AMass Goblins, a riddle from goLLUm, and the Desolation of Smaug

Amass Goblins expands on the existing amass mechanic, appending "Goblins" to the army type so goblin-tribal synergies aren't left out of amass strategies. The Chief Warg is the uncommon cheerleader for a black-green wolf army archetype using ferocious, letting you draw and lose 1 life when you attack while controlling a creature with power 4 or greater.

Magic card of Gollum crouching on rocky cliffs in a dark blue cave; text says Gollum, Riddle Master, Legendary Creature—Halfling Horror.

A mythic Gollum, Riddle Master asks you to pick odd or even. Then, when an opponent casts a spell with a mana value of the chosen quality, you can choose one of 3 options that hasn't been chosen that turn. And the Desolation of Smaug is a red board wipe dealing three damage to each non-dragon creature, with a recoup effect that lets you follow it up by casting another dragon.

Magic: The Gathering card of Gandalf in a red cave, raising a glowing staff amid goblins; text reads Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane.

Gandalf, Goblin's Bane is the set's mono-red mythic take on the beloved wizard, with a built-in Adventure: he exiles cards off the top of your library to play later as long as you control a Wizard. His static ability buffs him and deals ping damage when you cast a non-creature spell, which will be super helpful in storm shells. The panel framed this as the aggressive, terrifying side of Gandalf, the version goblins are right to be scared of.

Every adaptation wants to show you gentle, riddle-loving Gandalf and forgets he's also the guy who casually incinerates a pack of wargs. Glad to see a card that actually commits to that side of him.

The reprints and box toppers coming with The Hobbit

Beyond the Arcane Signet already confirmed as a Dwarvish language card, four more join it: Dwarven Warriors, Reaver Cleaver, a Mox Amber reprint, and a Treasure Vault reprint, bringing the Dwarvish language card total to five. Orcish Bowmasters and Call Forth the Tempest are also confirmed returning to the set's booster print run, alongside Flame of Anor and Sauron, the Dark Lord, the latter previously covered as a new-art box topper in our first look.

Twenty classic artist box toppers are also confirmed, new-art reprints from Lord of the Rings and its associated Commander-legal products, illustrated by artists from across Magic's history. They come foil in play and collector booster displays, with non-foil and surge foil versions inside collector boosters specifically.

Draft Night returns for four-player pick-two drafts

Yes. The 4-player Draft Night is back, built specifically for a pick-two draft format at home with three friends. Each limited archetype in the set is designed with multiple ways to build into it, supporting that faster draft format.

Alongside Draft Night you get the full run of product, minus commander precons. The Hobbit will also include a Gift Bundle, but most product sold out preorders near instantly online. Check with your local game store to see what their allocation looks like.

MTG The Hobbit FAQ

What new mechanics were revealed for MTG The Hobbit at MagicCon Amsterdam? Amsterdam confirmed four new mechanics: Recruit (draw, discard, make a token off a nonland discard), Storied (collect three historic permanents to turn on a permanent bonus), hone counters (extra power on Equipment), and Amass Goblins (an amass variant that appends the Goblins army type).

What is the Recruit mechanic in MTG The Hobbit? Recruit has you draw a card and discard a card. If the discarded card is a nonland, you create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token. It's tied to Lake Town's human characters and plays similarly to the Connive mechanic from Streets of New Capenna.

What is the Storied mechanic in MTG The Hobbit? Storied requires collecting three historic permanents, artifacts, legendaries, or Sagas, after which you gain a permanent enduring bonus for the rest of the game, similar in structure to the city's blessing mechanic from Streets of New Capenna.

Who are Thranduil and Bard in MTG The Hobbit? Thranduil, the Elvenking is one of the few three-color cards in the set, leading Mirkwood's elves. Bard, King of Dale pairs with the Queen of Dale around the Recruit mechanic, doubling the value from card draw and token creation.

What Scene Boxes are confirmed for MTG The Hobbit? Two Scene Boxes were detailed at MagicCon Amsterdam: Bag End Banquet, covering the dinner party that opens the story, and Treasures of Smaug, covering Bilbo's discovery in the dragon's hoard.

Are there more Dwarvish language card reprints beyond Arcane Signet? Yes. Four more join Arcane Signet: Dwarven Warriors, Reaver Cleaver, a Mox Amber reprint, and a Treasure Vault reprint, for five total confirmed Dwarvish language cards.

Does MTG The Hobbit have a new draft product? A four-player, pick-two draft product is returning, confirmed on the panel as Draft Night, designed for playing with three friends at home using a faster two-cards-per-pack draft format.
