MTG Storied mechanic explained: How it works in The Hobbit

Storied is one of two brand-new keyword mechanics arriving in Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit on August 14, 2026, and it's the one doing the heavy lifting on the game's Legendary and artifact-matters cards. It showed up on stage at MagicCon Amsterdam attached to Thorin Oakenshield and others, and the design team has been pretty open that it's a direct descendant of two mechanics you've already played with. at first blush, it may be a bit broken, but let's dive in and you can let us know what you think of the MTG storied mechanic.

What is the Storied mechanic in MTG

Storied is a threshold mechanic. The reminder text reads: "If you control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas, you have enduring story for the rest of the game." That's the whole check. Once you hit three qualifying permanents at the same time, even for a single moment, you lock in "enduring story" as a permanent state for you, the player, not for any specific card.

Enduring story doesn't care what happens after you earn it. Lose the artifact, sacrifice the Saga, have your legendary creature get removed, none of that matters. Once you've crossed the threshold, the bonus is yours for the rest of the game.

Thorin Oakenshield card shows a gray-bearded dwarf reading a map in green hills; Legendary Creature—Dwarf Noble.

What the bonus actually does depends on the card. Thorin Oakenshield is a two-mana legendary creature that gives your artifacts and creatures Ward 1 once you have enduring story, for the rest of the game whether Thorin dies or not. Bifur, Melodic Rider works differently: once you've got enduring story, he lets you trigger the activated abilities of your Dwarves an additional time. Same trigger condition, two completely different payoffs, which is the general shape you should expect from Storied cards across the set.

How Storied compares to Ascend and historic

Wizards told us that Storied started as a tweak on historic, the card-type check from the Kaladesh block that cares about artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas. Historic never had a threshold or a permanent bonus attached to it on its own, it was just a qualifier other abilities could reference. Storied borrows that exact checklist of card types, then bolts on the permanent-unlock structure from Ascend, the Amonkhet-block mechanic where hitting ten permanents earned you "city's blessing" for good.

So Storied is really historic's card-type list running through Ascend's threshold engine, just with a lower bar. Ten permanents for city's blessing was a real commitment. Three artifacts, legendaries, or Sagas in any combination is a bar most decks in the set's core archetypes clear without trying very hard, especially in Commander where legendary permanents are the default rather than the exception.

Why Storied rewards decks that are already doing their own thing

The mechanic isn't really designed to change how you build. It's designed to reward the shape of deck you were probably building anyway if you're leaning into Dwarves, artifacts, or the set's Saga-as-song subtheme. A deck that's naturally running a handful of legendary Dwarves, an Equipment or two, and a couple of Sagas is going to trip the Storied threshold by turn three or four without doing anything unusual. And even non Hobbit-focused decks can benefit. Like I laid out above, most Commander decks run a smattering of legendaries and artifacts. Enough to trip the trigger and earn you the permanent bonus.

That's a meaningfully different design goal than something like Power-up from Marvel Super Heroes, which actively wants you to hold a card and time its activation. Storied doesn't ask for a decision. It's closer to a stat check your deck either passes or doesn't, and once you pass it, you stop thinking about it for the rest of the game.

Where Storied comes up short

The permanence of enduring story is a strength late and a non-factor early. If your deck can't reliably assemble three artifacts, legendaries, or Sagas, Storied cards are just doing their base-line thing with a bonus you'll have to wait to see. Limited decks in particular are going to have a rockier time hitting the threshold than Commander decks will, since a 40-card Limited pool has far fewer legendary bodies to draw from than a 99-card Commander deck built around the theme on purpose. Those playing limited will have to mainly rely on the sagas and artifacts.

The other real limitation: Storied checks board state at the moment it's evaluated, not cumulative permanents played over the course of the game. If you never simultaneously control three qualifying permanents, even briefly, you never trigger it, no matter how many artifacts or legendaries have passed through your battlefield over the course of the game.

Which decks benefit most from Storied

Dwarf tribal is the obvious home, since the set is pushing Dwarf legendaries hard and Bifur, Melodic Rider directly rewards the archetype. Artifact-matters Commander decks are the other clean fit, especially anything already running Equipment or a go-wide artifact token plan, since those decks hit three qualifying permanents almost automatically.

Magic: The Gathering card Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern shows wolves under a burning tree; Saga text lists damage and destruction.

Saga-heavy decks are the sleeper category. The Sagas in this set are all framed as songs from Middle-earth's history, and a deck running even two or three of them alongside a couple of legendary creatures clears the Storied bar without any artifacts in the mix at all. Control decks that naturally accumulate legendary planeswalkers or Sagas over a long game also benefit, since they're likely to hit the threshold anyway on their way to stabilizing.

What this means for Standard and Commander

In Standard, Storied cards will get evaluated the same way most threshold or bonus-on-a-condition cards do: is the card good on its own merits, with the Storied payoff as upside, or is the card actively bad if you never turn it on. Thorin Oakenshield reads well either way, a two-mana legendary body is fine, and the Ward 1 upside is a bonus rather than the whole reason to play him.

In Commander, expect Storied to become a quiet inclusion across a lot of legendary tribal and artifact shells that already exist, not a mechanic that spawns a brand-new archetype on its own. It's the kind of ability that shows up on a build-around card, gets included because the deck was already going to hit the threshold anyway, and then mostly gets forgotten about at the table until someone asks what the enduring story actually does.

MTG Stories Mechanic FAQ

What is the Storied mechanic in MTG The Hobbit?

the MTG Storied mechanic is a new threshold in Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit, releasing August 14, 2026. If you control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas at the same time, you permanently gain "enduring story" for the rest of the game, unlocking bonus effects on cards that reference it.

How is Storied different from historic?

Historic, from the Kaladesh block, was a card-type qualifier that other abilities could reference but had no threshold or permanent bonus attached on its own. Storied uses the exact same list of card types (artifacts, legendaries, Sagas) but adds a three-permanent threshold that unlocks a permanent bonus once crossed.

How is Storied different from Ascend?

Ascend, from the Amonkhet block, granted "city's blessing" once you controlled ten or more permanents of any type. Storied uses a much lower threshold of three permanents, but restricts which permanent types count to artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas specifically.

Do I lose enduring story if I lose the permanents that triggered it?

No. Once you control three or more qualifying permanents at the same time, enduring story is locked in for the rest of the game, regardless of what happens to those permanents afterward.

Which decks benefit most from the Storied mechanic?

Dwarf tribal decks, artifact-matters Commander decks, and Saga-heavy decks all clear the Storied threshold naturally. Commander in general is a better home for the mechanic than Limited, since 99-card decks have far more legendary and artifact density to work with.

When does MTG The Hobbit release?

Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit releases August 14, 2026, with prerelease events running August 7-13 and an MTG Arena launch on August 11.
